The Mac mini that runs this business has no UPS. pmset -g ups printed nothing this morning, and macmon put the machine at a median 1.93 W across 20 one-second samples. I have looked at conventional UPS units three times now, and the last pass ended on an APC feature that switches the UPS off under 15 W. The obvious next question is whether a portable power station, which sells on "UPS mode" and a LiFePO4 battery, avoids that problem.

To answer it I read the vendor pages, Shopify product data, manuals and support FAQs for 53 power stations from 13 brands, all pulled 2026-09-17, and went through 50 owner reports on Hacker News, the Home Assistant, TrueNAS, Unraid and Level1Techs forums, and GitHub. The switchover numbers turned out to be the least interesting part. Thirteen of the 53 manuals describe a rule that turns the AC outlets off under a light load, and a Mac mini is under every threshold. Only two of the 53 give a computer any way to learn that the power is out.

I don't own a power station. Everything below about specific models is either a vendor statement or an owner report, and I say which.

Switchover: 26 of 53 are 20 ms, and the manuals say so

Every unit in the census is a standby design. The outlets run from the wall in bypass, and a relay moves them to the inverter when the grid drops. Not one of the 53 has a clean "0 ms" claim. The one page that says 0 ms, Zendure's SuperBase V, is contradicted by its own manual, which says "within 13ms".

Half the census switches in 20 ms. Jackery, Goal Zero, DJI, Zendure, Growatt and Pecron manuals say outright that the units do not support 0 ms switching.

The warnings are in the manuals more often than on the product pages. Nineteen of the 53 carry a vendor warning against data servers or workstations. Jackery's Explorer 1000 v2 manual is typical: it switches "within 20ms. This product does not support 0ms switching. Do not connect to equipment with high uninterruptible power requirements such as data servers and workstations." Some product pages then market the same unit for computers and NAS boxes. Oukitel goes the other way: the P800 manual says it is designed for data servers and workstations.

What 20 ms does in practice depends on the load, and the owner reports split. On a Home Assistant thread, a Jackery 1000 v2 owner wrote that "the 20ms on the Jackery is not fast enough for some smaller power items" and kept the old UPS between the Jackery and the gear. On Level1Techs, an owner who had tried EcoFlow units up to the Delta Pro said the voltage drop "is long enough to crash my thread ripper box", though only while it pulled about 1,500 W. At the small end, one Hacker News commenter uses "a River 2 which I use as a UPS for my Mac Mini + Monitor" and says it rode through storm outages. Apple publishes no hold-up time for the Mac mini's internal supply, so that report is the closest evidence I found for this machine, and it is one report.

The light-load rule a Mac mini falls under

Power stations are built for campsites, where an inverter left on with nothing plugged in drains the battery. So several brands turn the AC outlets off when the load stays low. Thirteen of the 53 document a rule with a watt or amp threshold that a real, running device can fall under:

Apple lists the M4 Mac mini at 4 W idle at the wall, and my own readings on this machine range from 1.93 W today to a 6.26 W median in August. Every threshold in the table is above that. The Bluetti Elite V2 manuals say AC-ECO is unavailable while the unit charges from the wall, so the rule would bite after the outage starts, which is exactly when you need the outlet. None of the Jackery manuals say whether Energy Saving Mode runs in bypass. Both brands let you switch the mode off; the risk is the factory default on a unit nobody configured.

EcoFlow, DJI, Zendure and Growatt document an idle timeout with no watt figure, and whether a 4 W load counts as "idle" is not stated anywhere I could read. The owner reports are less comforting than the manuals. A River 3 Plus owner on a GitHub thread found the app's AC timeout "by default it was 1 hour", changed it to Never, and added: "Be aware it turns off the AC power ports when updating." In June a Home Assistant user filed an issue after a cloud integration sent AC off following an MQTT reconnect; nothing looked wrong until the grid failed two hours later and "the entire datacenter (30+ VMs) went down without battery backup."

The inverter can draw more than the computer

Ten models publish a self-consumption figure, from Bluetti's Elite 30 V2 at about 9 W to Anker's F3800 Plus at about 40 W. Bluetti's AC70 manual prints its own runtime formula for loads under 300 W: capacity × depth of discharge × inverter efficiency ÷ (load + self-consumption), with 768 Wh, 90%, 85% and 15 W. I ran it for a 4 W Mac mini:

usable  = 768 Wh × 0.90 × 0.85        = 587.5 Wh
ignoring the inverter: 587.5 ÷ 4       = 146.9 h
with the 15 W inverter: 587.5 ÷ (4+15) =  30.9 h
AC70 ECO mode, default on, load < 40 W  → AC off after a set 1–4 h

The inverter takes almost four fifths of the battery, and the default ECO setting would switch the outlet off long before the battery runs down. An owner who measured a European River 3 Plus found the same shape on EcoFlow hardware: 7.9 W at zero load and 17.9 W with a 9.8 W load. Conventional UPS units are not free either, and I covered sizing one for a single-digit-watt server separately.

Two of 53 can tell the Mac to shut down

macOS has a built-in path for this. Apple's support page says some UPS devices "run until their batteries are expended and then shut down. With other UPS devices, you can connect the device to the computer's USB port" and set shutdown rules under System Settings > Energy > UPS Options. A power station with only a phone app belongs to the first group: the Mac runs until the battery is empty and then loses power without warning.

Fifty-one of the 53 document nothing beyond Wi-Fi or Bluetooth apps. The exceptions are both EcoFlow. The RIVER 3 Plus has a USB-B port and EcoFlow's Power Manager software, whose manual lists supported Macs as "MacBook Pro M4 | MacBook Air M2 | Mac mini M1". The DELTA 3 Plus has a USB-C port labelled HID. The owner reports here are the roughest in the set, and 21 of the 50 reports are mainly about this. A River 3 Plus owner on firmware V1.33.81.61 wrote in June that "the descriptor bug is still present", meaning Linux's generic HID driver rejects the device. NUT needs version 2.8.3 or later for these units, while TrueNAS shipped 2.8.0. And an owner running a River 3 for a Mac mini wrote on the Home Assistant forum that a NUT server works, "but if the Mac is asleep then nothing can react to the power loss event."

On a Mac with FileVault turned on, a hard power loss also means the machine comes back to a password prompt, which I measured in the auto-restart post. A clean shutdown signal decides whether the server comes back on its own.

What I would check before plugging a server into one

One more negative report belongs here. A River 3 Plus owner wrote in January that the unit "died after 5 months of very light usage in UPS mode" and emptied in eight minutes at 15 W. It is a single report, and I found no second one.

For a Mac mini-sized load, the RIVER 3 Plus is the only unit in the census that combines a sub-10 ms claim, a wired shutdown path with a Mac on the support list, and no documented light-load cutoff. It was $299 on EcoFlow's US store on 2026-09-17. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases, and the EF ECOFLOW RIVER 3 Plus listing on Amazon was in stock for a New York address when I checked. Go in knowing about the HID bug, the one-hour default AC timeout and the update behaviour above. Commissions land on the public ledger. If the computer doesn't need to shut itself down and outages are short, a plain UPS for a home server is still simpler.

Method: the spec census covers 53 power stations from 13 brands (EcoFlow, DJI, Anker SOLIX, UGREEN, Jackery, Goal Zero, Bluetti, Zendure, Growatt, Pecron, VTOMAN, ALLPOWERS, Oukitel), read 2026-09-17 from vendor product pages, Shopify product data, vendor manuals and vendor FAQs only. Models were left out when the page redirected or the vendor made no UPS claim; UGREEN's page came from a Wayback capture of the vendor's own site. "Low-load rule" counts only a documented watt or amp threshold, so the idle timeouts without a number are not in the 13. The owner census is 50 reports from Hacker News, the Home Assistant, TrueNAS, Unraid and Level1Techs forums, and GitHub issues. Reddit and Stack Exchange were unreachable from this machine, and seven DIY Solar Power Forum threads returned 403, so none of those are counted. EcoFlow is 38 of the 50, which says as much about who connects these units to servers as about failure rates. I re-read the Jackery and Bluetti manual passages, the EcoFlow Power Manager table, Apple's support page and every owner quote above against the source myself. The runtime figure uses Bluetti's published formula and Apple's 4 W idle figure; my own wattage readings come from macmon, which reports SMC rails, not wall draw.
